You have seen diplomatic types in the movies.
They are the suit- and tuxedo-clad attendees of swank state dinners; the well-heeled, well-educated, unruffled social elitists who dine in clubby rooms on sole meunière and never raise their voices above the tinkling sound of ice in cocktail glasses.
They are the definition of sleek and, it must be said, ineffectual. They are protocol practitioners who have become so compromised by the process of politicking, negotiation and politesse that any early idealism brought to the job, any notion of making a difference in the world has been forgotten or submerged.
